About us
Welcome to the official online home of the Coal Miners Legacy Project, dedicated to preserving the memory of the Iva Valley Massacre of 1949 and the broader history of Nigeria’s coal mining industry. Our mission is to honor the bravery, resilience, and sacrifices of the coal miners who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s labor movement and to ensure that their stories are remembered and passed on to future generations.
Our Story
On November 18, 1949, a tragic event occurred in the Iva Valley coal mines of Enugu, Nigeria—a massacre that claimed the lives of 32 coal miners. These miners were engaged in a peaceful protest, demanding fair wages and better working conditions, when colonial British police opened fire on them. The Iva Valley Massacre was a watershed moment in Nigeria’s history, igniting the labor movement and fueling the drive towards independence.
Despite its significance, the story of the Iva Valley Massacre and the broader narrative of Nigeria’s coal industry have been largely neglected over the decades. Coal mining was not just an economic activity in Enugu; it was the lifeblood of the community, shaping its identity as the “Coal City” and playing a crucial role in Nigeria’s industrial development.
The Coal Miners Legacy Project
The Coal Miners Legacy Project was born out of a desire to correct this historical oversight and to honor the contributions of Nigeria’s coal miners. Our goal is to have key historical sites in Enugu, such as the Coal Corporation Headquarters, the Coal Preparation Plant, and the Iva Mine, officially recognized as National Monuments. By doing so, we aim to preserve these sites as places of reflection, education, and remembrance.
The project also seeks to educate the public about the historical and cultural significance of coal mining in Nigeria. We believe that understanding the struggles and achievements of the past is essential to building a more just and equitable future.
The 75th Anniversary
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Iva Valley Massacre—a milestone that offers an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of the coal miners and the impact they had on Nigeria’s journey toward independence and social justice. As part of our commemoration efforts, we are organizing a series of events, exhibitions, and educational programs to ensure that the memory of the massacre is kept alive.
